Film about 'regenerative agriculture' to be shown at Canton Methodist Church

CANTON – Regional organization Waste Not Permaculture is presenting a screening of the award winning 2023 movie about regenerative agriculture, “Common Ground,” on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. at the Canton United Methodist Church, 21 Court St.

The film shows how large scale commercial farmers such as Rick Clark and Gabe Brown switched from the industrial agriculture model of the last 75 years to “regenerative agriculture.”

It demonstrates how these farmers are successfully using far fewer chemical inputs, saving money that can be reinvested in their farm instead of paying out to the agro-chemical industry.

“Additionally, by using cover crops, farmers are capturing tons of carbon in their soil, keeping it out of the atmosphere and lessening the climate uncertainties that every farmer has had to deal with in recent years,” said Waste Not Permaculture organizer Greg Todd.

The discussion to follow the film screening will focus on the question: can this model be replicated in Saint Lawrence County?

The panel discussion will feature local farmers Joel Howie from Canton Apples and Kia Beth Bennett from Bittersweet Farm. Audience questions and feedback are encouraged.
