Multiple threats of violence against SLC school districts reported, increased police presence expected

School officials in the Lisbon Central School District, Massena Central School District and Ogdensburg City School District, along with St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES are addressing multiple threats of violence against the districts.

In a release to Massena Central parents this morning, Sept. 17, Superintendent Ron Burke addressed the concerns, saying the report of a shooter was a misunderstanding.

"At approximately 10:25 AM, there was an anonymous report of a shooter at the high school.  Immediately, the school engaged its established emergency protocols. The students making the report were quickly found. Simultaneously, the student identified as the “shooter” was located and searched by the School Resource Officer. After searching the student and further questioning of the reporting students, it was found that the student was in possession of a small alcohol bottle, referred to as a 'shooter.' The reporting students indicated that this is what they were speaking about and not that the student had a gun," Burke wrote.

Burke commented that there was no actual shooter or any firearm in the high school.

"I commend those individuals who quickly reported what was heard. This allowed the School Resource Officer and administration to move into immediate action to ensure student and staff safety," he said.

All normal activities were resumed shortly after.

In Ogdensburg, Superintendent Kevin Kendall also released a statement regarding a social media threat from a student at John F. Kennedy Elementary.

Kendall said the student is currently in custody of the Ogdensburg Police Department and was never in possession of any weapon on school property.

"We know this information can be unsettling, but the safety of our students and staff members are our top priority. We are working with the Ogdensburg Police Department regarding the situation and will provide updates as necessary," Kendall wrote.

In Lisbon, Superintendent Pat Ferrand shared a message regarding an investigation "related to a threat hoax involving "BOCES."

"This statement is not credible as the statement that was sent out explains.

In the release Farrand cited, the administration of St. Lawrence-Lewis BOCES say they were notified of a social media post threatening violence against BOCES.

"The New York State Police were immediately notified and began the process of investigating the reports. We received notification from the State Price that it is believed to be a hoax threat as it is the same message that was circulated earlier today in western New York. The State Police also indicated that it has been dealt with by law enforcement," the statement reads.

"We are thankful the matter was reported immediately and that our law enforcement partners are able to investigate. I know this information can be unsettling to staff families, but it is our top priority to keep our students and staff members safe," the statement continues.

BOCES officials encouraged families to remain aware of such postings, urging families to report them as soon as they are encountered.

Officials say strong partnerships with New York State Police have led to quick responses, with police being supportive of efforts to respond to such requests for assistance.

"You may notice an increased police presence to ensure safety tomorrow," BOCES officials wrote.

The threats of violence came just a day after another threat was issued against the Gouverneur and Malone School Districts.

In both cases, school officials said the reports were unfounded after State Police and Sheriff's Deputies investigated the claims.

The St. Lawrence County Sheriff's Office and State Police warned of an increased police presence  "out of an abundance of caution" following those threats as well.
