POTSDAM — Hospital and EMS co-workers, family and friends celebrated Monday with a 20-year-old registered nurse after he completed his 9-week chemotherapy treatment at Canton-Potsdam Hospital.

After Lukas Kompan rang the bell in the CPH chemotherapy department following his final treatment, he was surprised to see fellow firefighters from his hometown in Constable and the mayor of Malone join the celebration.

In his spare time, Kompan volunteers as an EMS Captain for the Constable Volunteer Fire Department.

In addition, he works as an Emergency Medical Technician for Malone, Fort Covington and for the Foothills Ambulance.

“We are all so proud of how Lukas has handled it all. He has barely slowed down on responding to calls. He has had a super good attitude with it all,” said Constable Fire Chief Chris Bouissey.

Fire and rescue work runs in the family, with his father, Matt Kompan, and his grandfather, Curt Smith, fellow members of the Constable Fire Department.

The nursing profession runs in his family too, with Lukas’ mother, Deanna Smith, and grandmother, Nancy Smith, also registered nurses.
