CANTON -  The bottom line is just this, The St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund (SLCCF) is here to help and will do their best to provide financial assistance to organizations in their respective fights against cancer.

The Cancer Fund is now accepting applications for the 2025 funding cycle.

“We are an all volunteer group that prides itself on the fact that all funds raised remain here in St.Lawrence County to help our friends and neighbors. Our mission is and always will be to be dedicated to the local fight against cancer. Our focus is to raise awareness and funds for hospitals, cancer treatment centers and organizations in St. Lawrence County to provide education, early detection and screening, treatment and financial support for individuals battling cancer in St.Lawrence county “ stated SLCCF President Dick Christy in an email to North Country This Week.

Through an application process, local groups are encouraged to apply for grants distributed by the St. Lawrence County Cancer Fund that has existed in the county since 1979.

“This past year we gave out over $60,000 to our local communities. All monies raised stay in St.Lawrence County,” Christy noted.

Applications can be obtained by emailing: President @slccf.org or write to SLCCF PO Box 291 Canton,NY,13617. Deadline to apply is December 1,2024.

Long-time recipients of funding include the Cancer Treatment Center at Canton-Potsdam Hospital, Richard E. Winter Cancer Treatment Center at Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center, Ryan’s Wish, Hospice of St. Lawrence Valley, and the Gouverneur Hospital Cancer Care Center. New recipients this year were Compassionate Care Foundation and Jerry’s Run for a Cause.

“As an illness, cancer does not discriminate against who it touches even in the times of a pandemic. Support for the programming and services provided by these organizations during this time are more important now, than ever before,” Christy’s email read.

Each year, community members who have been impacted by cancer gather at the annual SLCCF/Edward I. Moses Walk/Run for Life, the Cancer Fund’s primary fundraiser.

This year the event will be held on April 27 beginning at 9 a.m. in Canton and Potsdam. To get a registration form, donate or to learn more about our group and any future activities visit www.walkrunforlife.com.

Community members interested in joining the committee are always welcome. Christy asked that interested persons or organizations visit the website and fill out a contact form at the bottom of the page and someone will reach out to them.
